That OM616 only has like 100 torques... it's gonna be pretty sluggish. The good news is that it'll be reliably slow for like 500,000 miles!
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:39 |

Yep.
Whole lotta yep.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:42 |

You could go with the no imagination route and buy a Jeep. Or you could be stupid and buy a car with very expensive parts when it breaks down. A true Oppo would go expensive and break down.

Is this where I put my bottle of wine?

Wasnt really built for highway travel. Or travel on any road for that matter.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:43 |

Damn that's purdy. Why don't they sell bare-bones models any more? How is that not a good idea? Yeah, I know people want more comfort, blah blah, safety, rollover, blah blah emissions, etcetera.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:44 |
|
But a Jeep might breakdown even more. Tough dilemma.

The empty fire extinguisher holder is telling.

Old Mercedes diesels are the opposite of new Mercedes anything. They just keep going...at an extremely slow pace.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:44 |

It probably expired.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:45 |

Tough indeed. I like being unique. Mercedes all the way
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:45 |

Slow but stylish.

I like it, but I'm wondering why you referenced that song in the title.

Who says a Jeep needs to be without imagination?

As a father of 2 children, I can appreciate the inclusion of the "naughty seat" way out back...
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:49 |

Cool. Good enough for me.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:49 |

Nice vehicle. I love the simplicity of vehicles with a basic instrument pod perched on the dash, like a'60s Mercedes, '70s Audi 5000 or an '80s Honda Civic.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:49 |
|
Slow yes but stylish, I don't see it. Just because it has a Mercedes badge doesn't inherently make it stylish. It looks no better than an older Jeep and a bit to war era kubelwagen.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:50 |
|
I think "extremely slow pace" may be an overstatement here.

Ribbed for pleasure
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:51 |

THIS. This is the G-Wagen I want. It's kept everything that was taken away or perverted by this . I hope it goes to a good home!
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:51 |
|
You should buy it, just to prove your point.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:52 |

I would but I get paid in Trident Layers gum.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:52 |

No one ever pays me in gum.
:(
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:53 |

These cars weren't made for going fast - they were made to go almost anywhere at a constant speed slightly above walking pace.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:53 |

It is so awesomely Spartan. I would love to be able to buy a truck that is a truck complete with hose-able interior. I would trade in my YJ (which is just as spartan) for this in a minute. Too bad it is on the wrong coast.

I reject your reality and substitute my own. This poor brute has lived a long life of extinguishing

My brother owned two 1986 300D sedans. They are the slowest things I've ever driven. Don't even try getting on the freeway if the on ramp has an incline.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:56 |
|
That's a cool G. I'd probably spend the $6.5k on that over $10k on a side by side 4 wheeler up at the cabin...
That I don't have.
Thanks for the dream of the day.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:56 |

Exactly. My brother had two 1986 300D sedans. Very good cruising vehicles.

This truly is a crazy find. I envy the person who wins the bidding war.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 10:59 |
|
Might, but parts are a lot less expensive.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:00 |
|
If this was a land rover I'd agree with your logic, but it's a diesel benz so your argument is invalid
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:01 |
|
This era Mercedes is very inexpensive to fix. Parts are absurdly cheap. I had a 300SDL from this same year. After a while, I just started replacing the parts I was taking off to get at the real issue. Need to replace a $14 ball joint? Might as well do the wheel bearing and control arms.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:01 |

awesome I'm greyed out on oppo but cool on jalop ... great system gawker's got here.. if you're cool on one site you should be cool on all...

Damn right. Thing will cross Africa ten times without popping the hood! It'll just take you like 5 years to do it!

Our unit at the Bundeswehr mainly used 250GDs - the Unimogs felt subjectively faster.

I have so much more want for this than the newer ones. This one is honest about what it is, and will keep running longer than pretty much everything out there.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:10 |
|
10/10 would wheel.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:12 |

subtle not familiar with the 4.0
Jeeps only break unnecessary parts like window motors. Unless you're beating the hell out of it on the trail, then axle shafts.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:15 |
|
That's a very cool truck, but there's something about the painted-over Velcro on the passenger side of the dash that makes seller's "NO RUST AT ALL" claim seem somewhat dubious.

A bit of a unicorn there, no?

I am currently the highest bidder.

Did you have a chance to go and check it out in person?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:37 |

Jeep owners have imagination don't get me wrong but when you defer to buying a Jeep without considering the other options you miss out on some cool choices ya know?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:39 |
|
Nope, in Wisconsin on business at the moment.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:40 |
|
I'd say it looks a little bit better than a Jeep. And it is more stylish because it is rare and therefore more interesting. (obviously I am generalizing here but you get the point.)
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:41 |
|
You do realize that every time there's a great find on eBay that gets published in blogs with this amount of exposure prices go thru the roof right?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:41 |
|
I am not sure but I imagine the parts on both are higher than a Jeep
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:42 |
|
For german cars, choose one: fast OR reliable. In this case, it is not fast, so we must assume it is reliable.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:55 |

What's up with this very non-stock looking too short hose?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:55 |
|
You do realize that I didn't publish it on Jalopnik, right? It was shared.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:59 |
|
Probably not, if you live in Europe. These old Benzes also aren't comparable to, say, a 2001 CL600.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 11:59 |
|
Oh man, the level of want for this is just out of control
![]() 08/20/2014 at 12:04 |
|
Bastards are making me work for this one... still high bidder but getting bumped quite a bit
![]() 08/20/2014 at 12:05 |
|
I do, it's just the fact of the irony of mass sharing that defeats the original purpose (again I realize your post was shared into the "general population")
![]() 08/20/2014 at 12:11 |
|
Or you could get this G-Wagen.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 12:13 |
|
Yellow... thats the only reason I can't bid on this, now at $9,100...
![]() 08/20/2014 at 12:32 |

So is this some sort of Teutonic Proto-Cupholder, or possible a sawed-off shotgun mount?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 12:52 |

This is relatively close to me, want me to check it out for you?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 13:18 |

Cigar holder?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 13:18 |

I get it- easy clean vinyl seats = commando edition!
![]() 08/20/2014 at 13:25 |

I have to agree with you on that. There's is tons of stuff out there. I think a Scout or a Mercedes G Class or an older 'mog would be awesome.
I just get sad when everyone equates Jeep = Wrangler because there's so many more awesome oddball Jeeps out there that don't get enough love. J-trucks, FC's, Jeepsters, FSJs, M715/M725 series, etc.

last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My neighbour's sister has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
This is what I do,,,,,,,,,,

Who doesn't want to ride in the back seat with their feet in the spare?
![]() 08/20/2014 at 14:12 |

I appreciate the offer and would say yes, but I suspect the price will skyrocket out of my realistic range shortly before it sells
![]() 08/20/2014 at 14:22 |

With 4 Days left and already of 10k, this likely wont go cheap
![]() 08/20/2014 at 14:30 |

I am so very curious if Torchinsky did the "will it baby" test. I'm sure there are no LATCH attachments on that jumper seat.
Still - so much want.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 14:43 |

As of 2:40PM EST it's up to $10,500 - with a little over 4 days to go. Damn - and I thought there for a second...

I like the Puch version better:

I was looking at this a couple days ago, couldn't bring myself to actually bid

Wow, the 4 cylinder diesel....last time I saw that engine it was paired to a 60 KVA generator.....
![]() 08/20/2014 at 17:31 |

Old CJs are rock solid reliable. They ain't fast and they handle for shit, but they're real hard to break.
![]() 08/20/2014 at 18:45 |

ya cause jeeps and mercedes are so compraable
![]() 08/20/2014 at 18:58 |

G-Class, Diesel, Manual. No further info required. If it was on this side of the pond I'd be bidding.
![]() 08/21/2014 at 00:03 |

I mean it is an icon. But I agree Jeep has other awesome options the Comanche and Jeepster being two of my personal favorites

All my German friends reckoned the 240D and four speed box combo to be THE most durable ever, one article I read said the 240D is up there with the 911 flat six as the most unburstable engine ever.
But two points occur to me:
1. It looks very much ex army with a yellow paint job; I was told it's not allowed to import ex military vehicles into the US. (Otherwise you'd all be knee deep in ex British military left hand drive Defenders).
2. My friend's GD240 Wagen wagon was rusted out to fuck, if this is to be used in anger, regular and comprehensive rust proofing needs to be (and have been) done before you start actually hosing it out - because unlike a Defender EVERYTHING on this rusts.
So this looks like excellent value, with it's no nonsense old school Mercedes commercial interior and simple easy to work on mechanicals, (BTW, it's entirely possible to swap out G class engine and main box for others from similar age Mercedes saloons as the G has a remote transfer box. Although this one looks far too nice to mutilate.) Also, this one is quite a bit lighter than civilian G Wagens so it should be better off road, as the weight of that hefty (and rust prone) steel body is normally the G's Achilles Heel.
Still be slow as hell on tarmac of course.
